What I’m Reading
I’m currently reading two books: Somebody Up There Hates You by Hollis Seamon (which I grabbed at BEA), and Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (which is a re-read). Bird by Bird is one of my favorite books about writing and since I’m back to first-drafting, I could use a little inspirational boost! I’ll share some of my favorite quotes next week.
What I’m Writing
It’s been tough to dedicate an hour every day to my new WIP in the midst of preparing for a move, but I’ve still made progress! I’m trying to take advantage of my train commute by bringing my notebook with me so I can write by hand. However, when I tried to write a scene on the train this week, I barely got words down because I spent the whole time trying to figure out what should happen next and how to go about it. I realized I need to find a way to be more productive during these small increments of time I have.
When I met with my critique group last week, my CP Ellen mentioned a blog post from 2011 that’s made the rounds called “How I Went From Writing 2,000 Words a Day to 10,000 Words a Day.” I’d read it once before but I didn’t remember everything so I read it again. There are some really great tips for upping your productivity! I won’t rehash them here, so check out the article. I love the idea of taking time before each scene to write down exactly what will happen. I decided to do just that…but for my entire WIP up front. I think having a detailed synopsis of the book will help me write words faster when I do have time to write. (Not that I’m expecting to write 10,000 words a day…)
Yesterday, I started writing down everything that happens, including plot, emotional changes, and even snippets of dialogue. It’s not the kind of synopsis that I’d send to an agent, but I think it’ll be a helpful tool to refer back to as a write. It’s nice because I can figure out some of the plot issues ahead of time, thus saving me time later. I love plotting, so this exercise has been really enjoyable so far. I’m getting more excited about my story. I’ll let you know how it all works out!
What Else I’ve Been Up To
Today’s my birthday!! I’m at work today but I still have a few fun things planned. I’m going out to lunch with co-workers–it’s Restaurant Week in NYC so we’re taking advantage. After work, my husband and I plan to head to the beach for a picnic dinner, which will hopefully involve farmer’s market pie.
Last Sunday, my husband and I went to a local winery for lunch and a tasting. It was yummy. A perfect birthday for me always involves yummy food. So far, so good!
Otherwise, I’ve been packing and getting other house-stuff together. We’re replacing the carpet in the bedrooms and getting hardwood floors installed in the living room and hallway, and we finally nailed down contractors. We also got some paint samples. Fun times!
What Inspires Me Right Now
Jessica Love and her book news! Check out the below announcement from PW’s Children’s Marketplace. I can’t wait to get my hands on Push Girls. You can add it on Goodreads here, and it’s already up for pre-order on Amazon and B&N. Congrats, Jess!!!!
