2013 YA Superlatives Blogfest: Best in Show

This week I’m participating in a few blogfests to celebrate my favorite books of 2013. On Monday, I shared my picks for the 2013 YA Superlatives Head of the Class categories. On Tuesday, I shared my Top Ten New-To-Me Authors from this year. On Wednesday, I shared my picks for the 2013 YA Superlatives Elements of Fiction categories. Today I’m back with my last YA Superlatives post.

Today’s theme is Best in Show:

Favorite Cover

I loved the illustrated covers of ELEANOR & PARK and FANGIRL (both by Rainbow Rowell) but I’m going to go with TAKEN by Erin Bowman, because look at this gorgeousness! (I mean the cover, not me!)

Cutest Couple

This is tough because there are so many in the books I read! The cutest of them all has to be Allyson and Willem from JUST ONE DAY by Gayle Forman.

Most Likely to Succeed (Pick a Printz Winner.)

I think David Levithan’s TWO BOYS KISSING is worthy of this prize.

Most Likely to Make You Miss Your Bedtime (Book you couldn’t put down.)

This actually happened with DANGEROUS GIRLS by Abigail Haas. I was a little more tired the following morning but SO worth it!

Best Repeat Performance (Favorite sequel or follow-up.) *and* Favorite Finale or End of Series Novel

The only new sequel/end of series novel I read this year was ALLEGIANT by Veronica Roth, and I thought it was a pretty good finale. (Read my full review with spoilers here.)

Romance Most Worthy of an Ice Bath

No question, THE INFINITE MOMENT OF US by Lauren Myracle. That sex-scene was the most steamy I’ve read in YA!

Breakout Novel (Your favorite book by a debut author.)

I must go with Rainbow Rowell’s YA debut, ELEANOR & PARK.

Best Old-Timer (Your favorite read of the year published BEFORE 2013.)

I’m going to pick two – SECOND CHANCE SUMMER by Morgan Matson and I HUNT KILLERS by Barry Lyga.

Book Most Likely to Make a Grown Man Cry

ALLEGIANT by Veronica Roth. Even a tough, manly man could shed a tear at that ending.

Most Pleasant Surprise (Book you didn’t think you’d like, but totally did.)

I’m…not going to answer this one. I don’t usually pick up books I don’t think I’ll like!

Most Creative Use of a Love Triangle

I enjoyed the love triangle in TAKEN by Erin Bowman, and how it’s from the perspective of a male protagonist. One who believes in true love, which is really sweet.

Sleeper Hit (Book you found so awesome you wish it had been hyped more.)

Honestly, I think all the books I found awesome were appropriately hyped, hence my desire to read them!

Favorite Outlier (Favorite picture, middle grade, or adult 2013 book)

My favorite middle-grade book this year was BETTER NATE THAN EVER by Tim Federle, and my favorite adult book this year was SOMEDAY, SOMEDAY, MAYBE by Lauren Graham.

And my category pick…

2013 Books On The Top of my TBR

There are a bunch of 2013 YA books I meant to read before year’s end but didn’t get to. On the top of that list is OCD LOVE STORY by Corey Ann Haydu, ALL OUR YESTERDAYS by Cristin Terrill, and JUST ONE YEAR by Gayle Forman. There are even more on my list, so I’ll be a happy reader for a very long time. :)

That’s it for the 2013 YA Superlatives! Thanks, KatieJessicaTracey and Alison for hosting!

Coming up tomorrow: I join the YA Buccaneers in sharing our favorite reads of 2013!

  1. Great list, Ghenet! I love this wrap up. I read most of the same books as you — funny :) We did stand in a lot of the same lines at BEA together.

Need to discuss the ending of Allegiant with someone. Going to read your post now!!

  2. I requested a copy of SOMEDAY, SOMEDAY MAYBE from our library, so I can’t wait ’til that gets here. I’m kicking myself for forgetting about TAKEN’s gorgeous cover. I honestly think it comes close to topping my list for the entire year. SECOND CHANCE SUMMER got an honourable mention on my favourite pre-2013 list. Such a great book!

  3. I’ve been hearing all kinds of great things about THE INFINITE MOMENT OF US this week. It’s definitely one I’ll be reading come January. And I totally agree with you on the love triangle in TAKEN. It’s refreshing to read one from the male’s perspective, and I thought Erin did a great job with it.

Thanks so much for joining us this week, Ghenet. I’ve gotten so many awesome recs from your posts! :-)

  4. Yes, those scenes in THE INFINITE MOMENT OF US were intense. I remember one in a car and yeah. Definitely pushed the limits in terms of what’s described further than any YA I’ve read.

As for 2013 books I didn’t get to but need to: CROWN OF MIDNIGHT, WINGER, ELEANOR & PARK, DANGEROUS GIRLS, and about a billion more!

  5. Great category! I have several 2013 reads on my Christmas list: Just One Year, How To Love, Unteachable… So many good ones I haven’t read yet!
