What’s Up Wednesday: 1/15/14

I haven’t done a WUW since before the holidays so I’m way overdue!

What I’m Reading

audrey wait

Right before Christmas, I started reading AUDREY, WAIT! by Robin Benway and I’m loving it so far! It’s hilarious and I’m glad I finally picked it up. I really should have finished by now but between the holidays and getting back into the swing of things after the New Year, I haven’t been reading as much as I should. I hope to finish it up before the weekend.

What I’m Writing

The good news is that I finally figured out a direction for my new WIP that I’m excited about. The bad news? The 20K I wrote last year are being discarded (well, saved on my computer in an archive folder) and I’m starting over. But it’s not really “bad” because a fresh start is exactly what I need. I struggled with this WIP last year and barely wrote as a result. I’m glad to put those old words behind me and write new ones with a better perspective. Focus is my word of the year, so I’m going to work hard to get this draft done ASAP.

What Else I’ve Been Up To

Last weekend, I celebrated one of my best friend’s 30th birthday and there were cake pops!

Unfortunately, I also managed to sprain my ankle on the way to the party. I slipped in the rain and landed on it. Womp, womp. I still made it to the party, and my ankle wasn’t bothering me too much during it, but the next morning it hurt like CRAZY and was swollen. A Sunday afternoon trip to Urgent Care revealed that it’s only a sprain so I’ve been working from home and staying off of it this week. Thankfully it’s healing fast!

Speaking of 30th birthdays, mine is coming up in July! Which means I need to revisit my Thirty Before 30 list and see what’s left to accomplish. (Spoiler: a lot!) I’ll post an update next week.

What Inspires Me Right Now

A few things have inspired me lately:

  • Susan Dennard’s post, “On Fear and FRABs (part 1).” She talked about one major source of writer’s block – fear – and really hit the nail on the head. Fear is the main reason I didn’t write very much in the second half of last year, so it was nice to know I’m not the only one to have experienced this. She has some great tips on how to push through that fear.
  • 2014 is the year when a bunch of my writer friends are debuting their books! It’s really inspiring to see their success, and I’m so proud of them. I shared the list of these books in yesterday’s Top Ten Tuesday post.
  • Sara Biren, who just announced that she signed with a literary agent! I’m always inspired by good news like this. Congrats, Sara!!!

What’s up with you this week?

  1. That was a really good post by Susan Dennard. I have to admit that I am living with a bad case of the FRABs. :-/ I’m happy for you that you know what to do with your story even if it means starting over. And who knows? Maybe you’ll use parts of those 20K words you’re archiving. It’s just great to be excited about it again, isn’t it? :-)

  2. I hope your ankle feels better soon!

I’m so excited to hear about your new novel idea. Let me know when you are ready to get started. I can always use a word sprint partner! :)

  3. So sorry about the sprain! But I’m glad you’re healing fast. It’s exciting that you’ve found a perspective on your WIP that is inspiring you. Have fun writing this week!

  4. Ouch, sorry to hear about the sprain. Hope that heals up fast. And it’s great you’re on the right path with your WiP. Always better to get it right rather than force it the wrong way.

    Have a great week :)

  5. Those cake pops look *delicious*, and yay for inspiring good news from writer-friends!! Also, re: cutting 20k of your WIP, I just want to congratulate you because I bet that was hard, but you can’t move forward if you’re not able to do things like that.

  6. Oh boy, that stinks about your sprained ankle. Glad it wasn’t anything worse though! That’s awesome you figured out the direction for your WIP! Hang in there with the rewriting! I’m sure it’ll be well worth it all said and done! Have a wonderful writing and recovery week!

  7. Happy New Year! Aww…too bad about your ankle but at least it’s just a sprain. Good luck with your new WIP. I don’t how many times I’ve “discarded” a piece and moved on. But it feels good to get started with something fresh especially when you know the other project wasn’t going anywhere anyway. Again, good luck!

  8. Hey, sorry about your ankle; there’s something really frustrating about hurting yourself on the way to a happy occasion. I managed to slip on wet surfaces and wrench my knee on two successive trips to Toronto; the last day of Wizard World con and a Doctor Who Society of Canada pub night. Sigh. At least wounds like that generally heal okay.

Best of luck with the fresh start on your WIP. “Audrey Wait” sure looks like a fun book!

    • I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with injuries too! You’re right about the healing – my ankle is feeling much better this week and it’s almost back to normal.

      Thanks for stopping by! :)
