What’s Up Wednesday: 2/26/14

You might be wondering where I went after my last post. I joined Writer Recharge (a February writing challenge), had a good first update, and then fell off the face of the planet. Well, Internet.

Friends, it’s been a not-so-great couple of weeks. It started shortly after my last post when I got some disappointing writing-related news. I won’t go into it, but it left me feeling discouraged and I decided not to share my pity party with the rest of the world. A few frustrating personal things also happened, which didn’t help. I’m still kind of dealing with some of it, but writing-wise I’m feeling much more positive, so here I am! I figured What’s Up Wednesday was the perfect way to check in.

What I’m Reading

To be honest, I haven’t been reading as much as usual this year. For the past 2+ years, I read about a book a week, but in 2014, I’ve read like 2 books. Maybe I just needed a break? But I’m in the middle of reading these amazing middle-grade stories written by my friends. I’m really enjoying them so far! It’s pretty incredible to read published books by people I personally know. I’m so proud of them.

I’ve also been critiquing and beta-reading a few friends’ manuscripts, which is always fun.

What I’m Writing

I’m still plugging along on my new WIP, but I haven’t worked on it much since I last posted. That disappointing news I mentioned above made me second guess my new idea again, so I decided to get some feedback from a few friends. Basically, I worried my idea wasn’t big enough. Getting feedback helped. I’m feeling a lot better about my WIP and ready to forge ahead. I’m sorry I missed out on the rest of Writer Recharge. I hope it went well for everyone! The YA Buccaneers have a new writing-related challenge coming next month, so stay tuned to our blog for the announcement!

What Else I’ve Been Up To

The last few weeks haven’t been all bad. I spent a weekend in the Poconos with my husband, one of my best friends, and her boyfriend. And they got engaged! My husband and I were in on the plan, so we helped with the execution. It was so amazing to be there! Then while the boys skied, my bestie and I hung out at the house and talked about her wedding plans while watching Say Yes to the Dress on Netflix. So fun! We don’t live in the same state so it was great to spend some quality time with her.

I also registered for the New England SCBWI conference in May. I had such a great time last year and I can’t wait to go back!

What Inspires Me Right Now

Let’s see…

  • Reading friends’ manuscripts and published books.
  • Spending time with close friends.
  • Conversations with other writers about our stories.
  • My little break from the Internet. It was actually nice to unplug and recharge.

What’s up with you this week?

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you got disappointing news and were left feeling discouraged, but I’m glad you’re feeling better now and are moving ahead with your WIP. Your weekend in the Poconos sounds great, too. I’m glad you got to go there as a chance to relax and spend time with your friend!

  2. I’m sorry about the disappointing news. So hard not to get derailed when we’re faced with stuff like that. I’m happy to hear that you’re writing again and that you have some great writer friends to give you much-needed feedback. That’s always a nice boost! I recently ran into a frustrating realization with my own WiP, but with a little time away I felt like I could approach it again. Whatever the news was, I hope the disappointment subsides.

Your time in the Poconos sounds awesome, especially the part with your friend getting engaged and all of the fun planning that followed. So fun! I sincerely hope this week is better for you, Ghenet!

    • Thanks, Jaime! It feels like I’ve been getting derailed too much when it comes to writing my new WIP, so I’m hoping I can really get past all my doubts and write a lot this spring. :)

  3. So sorry about your discouraging news, Ghenet. I’ve been there (a lot) and I can totally commiserate. I get not wanting to be a bummer online, and I think it makes perfect sense to take an Internet break when you need to. That said, I’m really glad your back and feeling better! Your trip to the Poconos sounds wonderful, and I loved the photos you shared on IG. Here’s hoping things are looking up for you now! <3

  4. Hey Ghenet, I hope things start looking up. You already sound like you’ve made some positive steps. Writing is tough, but we do it because we love it. Keep going. Write what you believe in. Sending good vibes your way!

  5. I’m sorry to hear it’s been a challenging time lately…if it helps, I totally hear you. Before last week, I hadn’t blogged since early December if that says anything. But I realized that through all the crap that’s been going on, my writing friends are one of the only things that have made me happy…so I had to find a way to get back to that.
I hope things turn around for you soon. You know my # if you ever need to talk. :)
