What’s Up Wednesday: 6/4/14

It’s been ages since I posted for What’s Up Wednesday, so with the end of the YAB Spring Writing Bootcamp, it seemed like the perfect time for an update!

What I’m Reading

While I was finishing up the first draft of my second manuscript, I wasn’t reading much. I found it hard to focus on my story while reading others. But now that I’m past the drafting stage, I’m excited to spend the summer catching up on my massive TBR pile. Right now I’m reading I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN by Jandy Nelson and I’m loving it! Her first novel THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE is one of my favorites and her newest is living up to the hype.

i'll give you the sun

What I’m Writing

The YAB Spring Writing Bootcamp was such a success for me, and I’m excited to keep the momentum going this summer. Which is why I’m so excited Ready. Set. WRITE! will be returning! I participated in this summer intensive last year and it helped me get through a big revision. I’ll share my goal for this summer along with the other writers on Monday. For more details, check out this post.

What Else I’ve Been Up To

May was SUCH a busy month. Between the New England SCBWI conference, two weddings, Mother’s Day and a family birthday, every weekend was packed.

Then this past Saturday, I went to BEA (Book Expo America). It was my first time attending on a Saturday–I went with a few CT writer friends and we’d gotten BookCon passes. While BookCon wasn’t what I expected (it seemed disorganized and was WAY too crowded), I still had a great time catching up with other writer friends who were at BEA and grabbing a couple of books I’ve been looking forward to reading. I also attended the #WeNeedDiverseBooks panel, and it was amazing to see how many people attended and how excited everyone was about bringing more diversity to kid lit. The recording of the panel is available on their Tumblr, if you’re interested – click here to listen!

Also, I’m drafting a long-overdue Thirty Before 30 update, so stay tuned!

What Inspires Me Right Now

Writer friends’ book deal news and book birthdays! Congratulations are in order for…

  • Fellow buccaneer Erin Schneider for selling her YA debut, WHERE THE WATER FALLS to Disney/Hyperion!
  • Kim Liggett for selling THE LAST HARVEST to Tor Teen!
  • Jessica Love for debuting PUSH GIRL yesterday! I can’t wait to read it!

Also, I’m so incredibly inspired by my husband who for months trained for the Bloomin’ Metric, a local 100K bike ride. He trained with Team in Training and raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Then this past Sunday, he did it – he rode 100K (62 miles) and was still smiling (and standing!) afterwards. It took a lot of hard work to train for this ride – lots of long bike rides, not always in perfect weather and involving hills, but it all paid off. I’m so proud of him!

What’s up with you this week?

  1. So glad you’re joining us for RSW, Ghenet! I’m happy you hear that you’re enjoying I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN. It’s next on my list and I can’t wait. THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE is one of my favorites as well. Have a wonderful week, lady!

    • Thanks, Katy! Isn’t Jandy Nelson’s writing SO amazing? I’m kind of glad I’m not drafting my WIP right now as I’m reading it because, wow. Her writing is something to aspire to. :)

  2. Sounds like you’ve had lots of great things going on! I read about how crowded and crazy things got at BookCon, but it’s awesome you were able to be there at BEA. Major congrats to your husband on his accomplishment, too!

  3. Sounds like BookCon was crazy but worth it, though I am sorry to have missed you :( , and so glad to hear Jandy’s new book is awesome. Congratulations to your husband for doing that race. We have family friends who participated too and I am so freaking impressed.

  4. I agree with Katy: so glad you’re joining us for RSW! Thanks for the shout-out too! And I’ll say it again, it’s awesome that your hubby did that cycling event. Even awesomer that he raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. My father is a lymphoma survivor, so huge thanks to your hubs!

I’ll have to read Jandy Nelson’s latest book when it comes out. I really enjoyed THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE, so I’m sure I’ll love this one too. Hope you’re having a wonderful week, Ghenet! :D

    • That’s so great that your father is a survivor! I’ll definitely pass on your appreciation to my husband. They had a leukemia survivor come to their last big dinner before the ride, and it was nice for them to put a face to the cause. Between everyone in their team, they raised $28K, which is pretty amazing!

You should definitely pick up I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN when it’s out. :)

  5. Okay, I think your husband and mine would get along very well, since mine runs marathons and yours apparently bikes insane distances! Like Jaime mentioned, our dad is a lymphoma survivor, so I’m thoroughly impressed that your husband chose to participate in a race for such a worthy cause. Glad he was still smiling after! Please pass on my congratulations to him!

I should really get my hands on a copy of I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN because I loved THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE. I’ve been craving some good contemporary lately too so that would be perfect.

I’m so glad you’ll be joining us for RSW! Looks like it’s going to be a fun and productive summer! :)

    • I’m so happy to hear your dad is a survivor. My husband’s team managed to raise over $28K for the cause which is pretty amazing! And now he’s hooked on long-distance riding, so I’m sure this is only the beginning. :)

I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN isn’t out until September (I managed to get an ARC) but you should definitely get a copy as soon as you can! It’s really good so far.

  6. I have been hearing SO many great things about I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN!!! Jandy / TSIE both have topped my list of favorite authors / favorite reads and I’ve been looking forward to her next book — happy to hear you’re loving it, too!

Looking forward to see what your summer goals are going to be — you did such an awesome job with bootcamp, I know you’ll knock Ready. Set. Write. out of the park!

And thank you for the shout out — I’m beyond excited for what comes next and honestly, still a little shell-shocked, to be truthful! I still can’t even believe I have an agent, let alone a book deal! :) You’re up next, my friend!!!

Your husband is so inspirational. 62 miles. Um, I don’t think I’ve rode my bike 2 miles in the last 6 years. :) And to support such an amazing foundation – huge congrats to him, HUGE!

Good luck on your update of 30-before-30!!! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got on there! Maybe I’ll steal some ideas for my 40-before-40…ugh. Never mind. I don’t even want to think about it…wayyyyy to close for my liking.

    • Thanks Erin! I’m so very excited for you and can’t wait to read your book. Here’s hoping I have some good news of my own to share soon. In the meantime, I’m excited to have a productive and fun summer. :)

  7. Wow! So much good stuff going on!

Best of luck with Ready, Set, Write! I am so tempted to participate, but this summer is going to be super-crazy for me. Le sigh. You’ll just have to rock it so that I can live vicariously through your awesomeness. :)

And huge kudos to your husband – 100 miles?!?! Wow. That’s awesome.

    Have a great week, Ghenet!

  8. So excited to read Push Girl too and yay to your husband! One of these years I’ll get to BEA but meanwhile love hearing everyone talk about it.
